Description: It is our pleasure to introduce one of our most treasured finds - a single cultivar oolong form the hills of Fukuoka, Japan. Quality oolong is an emerging product in the Japanese market and teas of this quality are still very hard to find. We are driven by the desire to discover teas the expand both our customers and our own expectations of what "Japanese Tea" can be. This lightly oxidized Oolong presents a profile most people would not expect from a Japanese tea - floral and fruity with minimal umami and no grassiness.
What is so special about this tea? While popular in both China and Taiwan, oxidized teas such as Oolong do not have a history of being produced in Japan. Traditionally, tea made in Japan was originally for the domestic market - and the domestic market demand was really only green tea. Additionally, for some in Japan it is stylish to drink imported tea such as black tea from Darjeeling or Oolong from Taiwan. The producer of Kawa Akari Oolong visited Taiwan and fell in love with the fragrance and mouthfeel of their fresh, green Oolong - specifically Wenshan Bao Zhong - a twisted leaf, floral Oolong from Ping Ling County. He undertook the challenge of creating something similar in Japan and after buying specialized equipment and taking several years to practice, Kawa Akari was born. Kawa Akari uses the Benifuuki cultivar - a clonal of both a Chinese and Indian varietals - imbuing it with an exotic character. Higher levels Methylated Catechin in the tea are said to act as a natural antihistamine, aiding in seasonal allergies.
Recommended for: A fresh and floral tea perfect for any time of day.

A wonderful suprise having Oolong from Japan. It holds it own to Taiwan high mountain oolong with its depth and nuance
This tea is an absolute delight to experience. First smell made me think of dried jackfruit. This carried through to the taste on the first steep with notes of buttery greens. It is very full on the palate with a nice astringency on the finish. A true treasure to explore for multiple steeps. Well done!
This tea really does taste like an Oolong from Japan! I know this sounds silly to say but the character of the tea is very similar to other traditional Japanese green teas; full of sweet grass umami, mild bitterness, and a distinct roundness from the oxidation to create a wonderfully grassy, richly aromatic Oolong!
This tea is fantastic!!!
This tea is super complex. :) You can brew it multiple times and get a ton out of it!
