Katade Kyusu - Yoshiyuki Shimizu

This handmade tea pot was crafted exclusively for Kettl by master potter Yoshiyuki Shimizu, using Amakusa clay sourced from Kumamoto. Shimizu-san mixes porcelain and clay to create a unique, clean, and beautiful piece.  The tea pot is glazed on the inside, creating an ideal tea pot for everyday use.  The inner glaze will prevent lingering aromas after use, allowing this tea pot to be used across a wide variety of teas, including herbal.

Yoshiyuki Shimizu trained under Atsuya Hamada, the son of renowned Living National Treasure Shoji Hamada. He now creates his work from his studio in Dosenbo, Minamiyamashiro, located in the Uji region.

Yoshiyuki Shimizu

Yoshiyuki Shimizu (born 1966) is a master potter and tea roaster based in the Dōsenbō district of Minami-Yamashiro Village, Kyoto Prefecture. Shimizu’s ceramic practice is deeply rooted in the raw, elemental materials of his locale: he uses local clays, ash from his own firewood as glaze, and designs his kilns to explore the unpredictable beauty of fire and form. He is also celebrated for his unique approach to roasting houjicha - crafting each batch by hand, slowly roasted over a clay pan. Utilizing local Dōsenbō tea, like his pottery, his houjicha reflects the place he calls home

An unwavering commitment to quality.
