Yoshiyuki Shimizu Okinawa Black Clay Chawan

Variant

Yoshiyuki Shimizu is not only a master potter - but also an astute student of traditional Japanese clay and glazing techniques. His passion for traveling Japan’s countryside in search of unique clay brought him to the shores of Okinawa - where he discovered the deep black glaze composed of volcanic ash. This unique glaze combined with a 4 day wood firing creates a deep, expressive, and powerfully evocative finish.

This collection of chawan is meant for traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, but each piece can also be used more casually in the home. While rustic and sharp, each bowl was crafted to exacting standards, and their apparent simplicity exemplifies the talent and deep understanding that only master craftsmen like Shimizu san possess.

Yoshiyuki Shimizu

Yoshiyuki Shimizu (born 1966) is a master potter and tea roaster based in the Dōsenbō district of Minami-Yamashiro Village, Kyoto Prefecture. Shimizu’s ceramic practice is deeply rooted in the raw, elemental materials of his locale: he uses local clays, ash from his own firewood as glaze, and designs his kilns to explore the unpredictable beauty of fire and form. He is also celebrated for his unique approach to roasting houjicha - crafting each batch by hand, slowly roasted over a clay pan. Utilizing local Dōsenbō tea, like his pottery, his houjicha reflects the place he calls home

An unwavering commitment to quality.
