Based in Yakushima since 1982, ceramic artist Masayuki Yamashita creates pottery deeply rooted in the island’s rich natural environment. Working primarily with wood-fired kilns, he uses local clay, ash, and the unpredictable effects of flame to produce vessels that embody both quiet simplicity and raw natural energy.
His works are often unglazed, allowing the interaction of fire, ash, and earth to create unique surfaces and textures impossible to replicate. Each piece carries subtle variations shaped by the kiln atmosphere, making every work one of a kind.
In addition to functional tableware, Yamashita also creates sculptural forms inspired by the forests, animals, and spirit of Yakushima. His pottery reflects a deep dialogue with nature — timeless objects that bring warmth, texture, and a sense of place into everyday life.
